1.6 Curriculum

The SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Yogyakrata currently is using a combined curriculum of Islamic and Indonesian educational systems.

Muhammadiyah is a term attached to the names of educational institutions in Indonesia that utilize and promote the teachings of Islamic religion. Muhammadiyah is an Islamic organization that mainly focuses on bridging educational landscape that is designed with the doctrines of the said religion. However, Muhammadiyah schools can not only use this kind of curriculum because they are still mandated to apply the framework of the curriculum arranged by the government, which was referred to us as “2013 Curriculum”.

The 2013 Curriculum is actually a newly revised structure as it is obviously stated on its title. It covers six years in Elementary (SD), three years in Junior High School (SMP) and three years in Senior High School (SMA). SD is composed of grades one to six; SMP has grades seven to nine, while SMA is made up of grades 10 to 12.

It is a learner-centered curriculum, which means the activities and teaching-learning processes are focused on students, not on the teacher. It suggests the teachers to use strategies and teaching methods such as constructivism, experiential learning, exploratory method, collaborative approach and the like.

In addition, Curriculum 2013 offers an educational table where students attend school each day from 7:00 o’clock in the morning until 3:00 o’clock in the afternoon. Usually, the teaching hour for each subject is one to two hours, which will include motivational introduction, discussion, students’ activity and sometimes performance assessment. That is a daily regulation from Mondays to Fridays. Moreover, the 2013 curriculum also encourages the teachers to avoid giving homeworks and assignments to the students, for according to the curriculum authors, a 7-AM-to-3PM class is already tiring. However, assignments are given when needed.

Each student must finish two semesters, 35 to 38 weeks, in order for him or her to finish the whole academic year. This system will run with them during their stay in the school for three years.
